Baclofen (sold under the brand name Lioresal) is an externally administered chemical substance, mainly used for the treatment of convulsions caused by certain medical problems such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, etc. Chemically, Baclofen has been derived from the neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It acts as a depressant of the central nervous system (downer) and is used to relax spasmodic contractions of skeletal muscles. The drug can also be used as a medication for the treatment of muscle symptoms such as muscle pain and stiffness.
