Omeprazole is a medicinal drug that is used to treat conditions caused due to excessive acid production in the stomach. This medicine belongs to the family of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors or PPIs.
Omeprazole is widely used to treat stomach and esophagus problems such as ulcers and acid reflux, whereas the drug has also proved useful to treat other diseases such as erosive esophagitis, symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as well as stomach infections caused by bacteria Helicobacter pylori.
The medicine may also be used to prevent the cancer of the esophagus. Too much stomach acid can pose serious health problems such as indigestion, acid reflux leading to heartburn, pain in the lower abdominal region, burning sensation, bloating, etc.
